What We Do and What We've Done...
Financial Support to Town Projects
  • The Bethel Jaycees have been a major financial and manpower contributor to the building and re-building (after arson) expansion of the Playspace at Meckauer Park.
  • We are providing financial assistance toward putting the 'swing' back into Parloa Park.
  • We provided similar support to the new playground at the Rockwell Elementary School and for the dugouts at the Johnson School.
  • We built a gazebo for the town.
  • We've brought new life to basketball at Meckauer Park.
  • We've bought two defibrillators for the Bethel Fire Dept .

Sponsorship of Children's Teams

  • Each year we sponsor, and in some cases coach, T-ball, softball, baseball, soccer, and basketball teams participating in leagues offered by the Bethel Parks & Recreation Department. In addition, we provide support to travel teams in soccer and softball.

Scholarships and Awards

  • Scholarship Award(s) are given to graduating Bethel seniors, regardless of where they attend high school. The award is based upon an essay describing the individual's commitment to community service.
  • Sara Mass Memorial Award. Awarded in memory of Sara Mass, teacher and former Chairperson of the Bethel Board of Education, tragically killed by a drunk driver. The award, based upon nominations solicited from the Bethel community, is given to individuals who have made a positive difference in education in Bethel. Prior winners have included teachers, administrators, and volunteers.

Holiday Events

  • Senior Swing - An evening of dinner and dancing is provided for Bethel's Swinging Senior Citizens. We provide the transportation, prepare and serve the food, and offer prizes donated by area merchants.
  • Toys for Tots to Teens - Run in December, we provide drop off points around town for people to donate new toys. We then distribute them to families based on information provided by Bethel Social Services. Needs not met through the drop off points are addressed by the Jaycees. 'Excess' contributions are distributed to area shelters and hospitals.
  • Pictures with Santa - Children are cordially invited to come see Santa on his day in Bethel to let him know what they would like for the holidays and to have their picture taken with him!

Fund Raising Activities

  • The Haunting at Meckauer Park (Sequel to our Haunting of Blue Jay Orchards)- Held in October this event draws over 10,000 people a year. You never know what's around the next bend!
  • Norwalk Oyster Festival - The Norwalk Jaycees run a concession at the annual Oyster Festival, and we help out with some manpower. For this we get to cook, socialize and share part of their good fortune
  • Bethel's Best Pizza Contest - Pizza Restaurants from the Bethel area are invited to participate and compete for 'Bethel's Best Original Pizza' and 'Bethel's Best Creative Pizza.' The community is encouraged to come, purchase a ticket, taste the many pizzas available and decide which they like best.

The Bethel Jaycees at Ground Zero

On April 20 and May 11, 2002, members from the Bethel Jaycees were provided the opportunity to volunteer at St. Paul's Chapel at Ground Zero. Both days were long 12-hour shifts, but they were well worth it! Due to money aquired from the 2001 Haunting at Blue Jay Orchards, The Bethel Jaycees were able to donate $2000 to the Red Cross as well as $3200 to St. Paul's Cathedral for their 9/11 efforts.
